Step Back in Time at Farmers Branch Historical Park

A museum exhibit at Farmers Branch Historical Park

For a unique journey back in time, head to Farmers Branch Historical Park. About 18 minutes from our apartments in downtown Dallas, this living history museum works to preserve and celebrate the history of Texas and the United States. Our favorite highlights at the park include:

1936 Texaco Service Station

Step back to 1936 when the first service station opened in Farmers Branch. The Texaco replica features a brightly-colored exterior and canopied gas pumps, which aimed to attract customers. It’s where you’ll also see a 1936 cab-over-engine Ford truck which was used on the Glad Acres thoroughbred horse farm. The truck features a distinctive flat front. What’s more, after restoration, it’s in working order once again.

Gilbert House

Constructed in 1856, the Gilbert House is Dallas County’s oldest structure remaining on its original foundation. It was the home of Dr. Samuel Gilbert and his wife, Julia. Built in dogtrot style, it features limestone walls, chestnut plank floors, and native Texas furniture.

Dodson House

William and Maude Dodson married in 1917. Twenty years later, they constructed what is now called the Dodson House. The couple realized they built too close to a flood-prone creek, so with the help of family and neighbors, they moved the home. Today, the first floor is for receptions and group tours while the garage is currently a museum store.

General Store

Built at the park in 2012, the General Store features replicas of products sold in the 1920s. The design mimics three stores that operated in Farmer’s Branch during this era and also features hands-on experiences.
